چکیده

Sweet potato belongs to Ipomoea series batatas and is thought to have originated in Central America and Northern South America. World sweet potato production is around 106 million tons in an area of about 8.1 million ha. Asia is the world’s largest sweet potato-producing region and China is the world’s leading sweet potato-producing country accounting for about 76% of production. Sweet potato has not attracted the attention from modern geneticists that many other economically important crops have because of its high ploidy. The genes related to tuber storage protein, sporamin, sucrose metabolic genes, storage root-inducing genes, proteinase inhibitors, cystein proteniase, retrotranspogens, and senescence-related genes were studied in sweet potato; similarly, sporamin, wound regulated, peroxidase and GBSS promoters were used for developing transgenic plants. Transgenic plants sweet potato with biotic stress (weevil, virus), abiotic stress (drought, early frost, low temperature), and herbicide resistance as well as improved starch quality and fatty acid composition have been developed. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Adoption Intensity Determinants for Improved Sweet Potato Varieties among Farmers in Nigeria

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is one of the stable tuber crops consumed by many households in Nigeria. It can be found in different varieties and exist in many colours of skin and flesh. The production of this important crop is still very low, thereby compromising food security. Sweet potato is one of the target commodity crops under the Nigerian Agriculture Sector Investment Opportun...

Production of transgenic Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) steud. using chitosan nanoparticles to express antimicrobial genes resistant to bacterial infection

Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) Steud. is a very important hard woody plant, an extremely fast-growing tree and produce timber. Therefore, there is a demand to produce transgenic Paulownia plant resistant to bacterial infection. Microbial infection (especially bacterial one) is serious sever and cause a loss in plant productivity as they bear upon the character and amount of plan...

Construction of Plant Expression Vectors Harboring WRI1 and LPAAT Genes and Its Transformation in Tobacco Plants

In oilseed crops, a number of genes involved in the production of triacylglycerol have been identified that changes in their expression have increase the seed oil content. WRI1 and LPAAT are key genes in this synthetic pathway that their overexpression can increase the oil content. In this study, the expression vectors carrying WRI1 and LPAAT genes were designed and constructed for genetic tran...

Plant Biotechnology 23, 75–83 (2006)

With the purpose of enhancing environmental stress tolerance of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas, cv. Kokei 14), we transformed this plant with spermidine synthase genes derived from Cucurbita ficifolia (FSPD1). The FSPD1-transgenic plants showed twice as high spermidine content as the wild type (WT) counterpart in both leaves and storage roots. One of the most characteristic features of the trans...
